Managing Depression – 3 Simple Tips

With depression becoming more common, it is important to know what you can do if you notice yourself beginning to feel unusually down. Here are three simple tips for managing depression more effectively:

1. Socialise

Getting out of the house and being in the company of others can be extremely difficult when feeling depressed. It might be particularly hard to put on a happy face when you are really feeling down on the inside. Nonetheless, research shows that for most people socialising is an almost essential ingredient in feeling better. Socialising gives us a chance to focus on other topics and as such gives us a break from our negative internal struggle. In addition we get support for ourselves in the process.

2. Build a Routine into Your Day

Routine is an important part of every day. It protects us from withdrawing from activities or others and helps to keep us engaged. Routine is particularly beneficial when it integrates the things we value such as time with our children, exercising, playing sports, going out for dinner, engaging in a hobby, meeting up with friends or even simply having a scheduled relaxation break. Consider how your routine is influencing your mood and then add activities into your daily routine that enhance your mood.

3. Shift Your Mental Focus

Negative thoughts are a part of life. Sometimes the mind will get itself into a loop, repeating all the negative things that are happening in your life. Rather than trying to fight these negative ruminations, simply notice these thoughts being repeated (without judgment) and gently move your attention to doing activities that are important to you. Negative thoughts don’t have to be stopped… as we can stop following what they say.
